About Tennis
Tennis is an exciting and wonderful game that is played between two players in singles matches. There are also matches were there are two teams and two players on each team, which is called doubles. Players use a strung racquet to strike a hollow rubber ball. The ball is most of the time yellow, which is the official color. The goal is to strike the ball over a net into the opponent’s court, and try to hit it so that the opponent are unable to return the ball back over the net.
Tennis originated in England a long time ago in the late 19th century, which was then referred to as “lawn tennis”. This sport has roots going way back to an ancient form of the game, and it firstly spread throughout the English speaking world. Then tennis was only played by the upper classes. Today tennis is played by basically everyone, and the sport has once again become an Olympic sport. The great thing about tennis is that everyone who can hold a racket can play this game, and there are no age limits.
The rules in tennis have stayed unchanged for a very long time. There was an adoption of the tie-breaker in the 1970s, but besides that the rules have remained remarkable unchanged since the 1890s. A more of a recent addition in this magnificent sport is the addition of the “instant replay” technology, where a camera can catch if the ball was over the line or not. Let’s face it, it is almost impossible for the human eye to tell if the ball was in or out, when you look on how fast the ball travels in today’s tennis. In connection with this new technology each player can now challenge the official call of a point, were the camera technology will take a closer look on the point and make the decision.
Tennis has grown into a huge sport over the years, and is now played by millions of players along with millions of people word-wide who follow the sport as spectators. The four most important tournaments in tennis is: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. In the recent years the growth of tennis in Eastern Europe and the Far East has been especially notable.
